" DON'T WALK ALONE " Walking Escorts
The Student Marshal Program provides a walking escort service, which is available to University students, faculty, and staff members. The Department of Public Safety is responsible for this program, which is housed at 019 Watson Hall and managed by the Students for Community Safety Division. The members of the Department of Public Safety recognize the importance of the Student Marshals. The Student Marshal role is significant and their responsibilities are critical to the safety and security of the members of our community. Student marshalls work in teams of two and are equipped with bright, yellow jackets and protable radios. When Marshals are not escorting, they patrol specific academic and campus locations. During their patrols, they check for, and observe and report, any potential hazards, suspicious persons, and unlawful or unauthorized activity.
Student marshals are provided with in-depth training to help them learn how to perform their duties and responsibilities in a professional, effective, and efficient manner. Further support comes from the five professional staff members of the Residential Security Program. These members provide leadership, support, and guidance to the Student Marshal staff.
Walking escorts are provided from academic buildings to residence halls or parking facilities, and vice versa. Escorts can be requested by calling the Department of Public Safety at 443-2224. Student marshals provide walking escorts during the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. throughout the academic year. At all other times the Department of Public Safety can be contacted for this service. This service does not extend to off-campus locations. University community members are encouraged to use the free shuttle bus system whenever possible. Please remember that when you attend social events, arrangements should be made to walk with friends.
