Bike theft on campus occurs year-round. However, during the summer, fall, and spring, the rate of bicycle theft on campus increases dramatically. Our statistics indicate that criminals who steal bicycles from our campus target those that are not secured with a u-bolt-specified lock. In response to the anticipated thefts, we are asking you to take proactive measures to ensure that you do not become a victim of bicycle theft. By correctly using a u-bolt-specified lock, you will minimize the chance of your bike being stolen.
The choice of minimizing the opportunity of crime is yours. Our goal is to reduce your costs associated with crime. You play an important role in achieving this goal. You can help yourself and the community by first using a u-bolt-specified lock and secondly, by properly locking your bike with it.
We are available to demonstrate which u-bolt-specified locks have proven to be successful deterrents against theft. Visit our office to register your bike and to learn how to prevent your bike from being stolen. We hope that you seriously consider purchasing a u-bolt-specified lock as an alternative to having your bike stolen.
The Department of Public Safety is located in Sims Hall, ground floor. You may make an appointment by calling 443-2224.
Bike Registration - As a courtesy to members of the community, bicycle owners may bring their bikes to the department for registration. The department registers bikes with the City of Syracuse using a registration number. National studies have shown that registered bikes affixed with a clearly identified registration number are less likely to be stolen. If a registered bike is stolen, the registration number may help in its recovery and return to the rightful owner.
Tag A Bike Program - Public Safety officers patrol the areas where bicycles are parked. Officers will affix a tag on those bicycles left unattended or with insufficient locking mechanisms as a reminder to register and/or secure your bicycle to prevent theft.
