About the Walking Escort Service

Because the first resources for safe student transportation on campus are the Centro and Ultimate Arrival bus systems, safety escort requests to DPS during bus hours may be to the nearest bus stop. You should familiarize yourself with the bus schedules and plan your activities around the schedule.

When the busses are not available (generally from 3:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.), DPS staff will provide a walking or riding safety escort to SU students, faculty, and staff from on-campus or near-campus locations to another on-campus location, or if necessary, your near-campus residence. If busses are not running, the escort may be directly to a residence hall, south campus residence (if the Ultimate Arrival Warehouse Express is running, Main Campus to South Campus escorts may be referred to this service) or other near-campus residence.

Bus schedules are available through Centro here and also via SU Parking and Transit Services - we urge students to plan ahead and know the bus schedules.

Walking Escorts are provided for SU students, staff, and faculty on Main Campus from academic buildings to residence halls or parking facilities, and vice versa. The program operates from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. throughout the academic year. After 11:00 p.m. DPS staff will provide either a walking or riding safety escort if no transportation services are available.

Walking escorts can be requested by calling 315-443-7233 (SAFE).

About the Shuttle Escort Service

DPS provides shuttle escorts and walking escorts to ensure that members of the campus community arrive safely to their destinations. As such, the shuttle services are secondary resources to other established transportation methods, including Centro buses.

Safety escort requests during bus hours may be to the nearest bus stop. You should familiarize yourself with the bus schedules and plan your activities around the schedule. When the Centro busses are not available (generally from 3:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.), DPS staff will provide a walking or riding safety escort to SU students, faculty, and staff from on-campus or near-campus locations to another on-campus location, or if necessary, your near-campus residence.

We encourage University students, staff and faculty to utilize the shuttle service ONLY when other safe transportation methods are unavailable. We reserve the right to redirect callers to other transportation services, if services (like Centro bus routes) are readily and safely available. Each shuttle escort phone call is evaluated on a case-by-case basis for such recommendations.

Please note that groups of three or more persons are considered a safe walking group. If a group of three or more calls requesting a shuttle escort, they will be referred to available transportation services or advised that three or more persons is considered a safe walking group.

The safety escort service is not a commuter ride service. These escorts are solely for your safety and not for convenience. For your convenience, please utilize the Centro buses or call upon local taxi services, which are readily available and listed in the local phone book.

And while the Department of Public Safety does not endorse any particular company, a listing of Syracuse taxi companies can be found through yellowpages.com.

Shuttle-U-Home

Shuttle-U-Home provides free transportation from campus for Syracuse University students, faculty, and staff who reside off campus within a designated geographic area. The shuttle runs daily from 8:15 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. during the academic year. Please note that the shuttle will take you to YOUR residence, and no place else.

To use the shuttle, you must present your SU or ESF ID and sign up in the Students for Community Safety (SCS) office at 019 Watson Hall.

The Shuttle-U-Home program operates on a first-come, first-serve basis; you cannot reserve a spot on the shuttle. The shuttle holds seven passengers, and the length of the trip depends on the number of passengers and their destinations, as the shuttle does not operate on a fixed route.

Keep in mind that the shuttle can be delayed due to weather and/or traffic conditions.

Other reminders about the Shuttle-U-Home service:

  • If weather causes poor road conditions, the shuttle may be cancelled at any time during the hours of operation, due to safety issues.
  • The shuttle is unable to transport infants or toddlers due to lack of safety equipment.
  • The shuttle is unable to transport bicycles.
  • The shuttle does not leave immediately upon your arrival. The shuttle will leave 10-15 minutes after the first person registers for the trip.
  • The shuttle is not a taxi service. Please help the driver of the shuttle with the location of your residence.

The service, with one driver and one monitor, departs from Watson Hall and operates within specific  boundaries.
