OVERVIEW

- Alarms are directed to a 24-hour monitoring center at the Department of Public Safety so that an officer may be dispatched immediately.
- Alerts are issued in a timely manner to notify community members of all serious crimes that represent a threat to students and employees.
- Blue Lights - The Blue Light System is a series of emergency alarm stations strategically located throughout campus to provide assistance
to anyone in distress. A blue beacon shines above each alarm station. When an individual presses the alarm button, they can communicate directly with the Communications Officer at the Department of Public Safety.
- 711 Emergency Line - We encourage all students, faculty, staff, and guests of the University to promptly report all criminal incidents and other emergencies to the Department of Public Safety. To report a crime or emergency, dial 711 from any campus phone.
- Crime Prevention Initiatives - The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety believes it is better to prevent crimes than to react after the fact. A primary vehicle for accomplishing this goal is the department's comprehensive crime prevention strategy. This strategy is based on a multi-layered approach that includes proactive area patrol of the campus, crime prevention education and training, building and area surveys to assess risk and recommend compensatory measures, and property registration. The Crime Prevention Unit is available to assist any individual and/or group in planning, presenting, and coordinating programs of interest or concern.
- Students for Community Safety: Walking Escorts ("Don't Walk Alone") - A walking escort service is available to University students, faculty, and staff members from University buildings to residence halls or parking facilities by calling 443-2224. Student Marshals provide the walking escorts during the hours of 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. throughout the academic year. At all other times a Public Safety Officer will provide this service. This service does not extend to off-campus locations. University community members are encouraged to use the free shuttle bus system whenever possible. Code of Student Conduct. Contact 443-2224 with any questions.
- Parking Patrol - The Department of Public Safety's Community Service Officers patrol all of the University parking garages and surface parking lots on a regular basis, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, year round.
- Patrol Services - You may see our Public Safety Officers using various modes of transportation while patrolling our campus. These include: car patrol, foot patrol, motorcycle, and bicycle. The combination of these patrol methods allow us to access areas of the campus that would be impractical or impossible with a patrol car.
- Students for Community Safety: Residential Security - The Department of Public Safety has been responsible for the Residential Security Aide Program since 1998. Residential Security Aides (RSA's) are posted at the main entrance of each residence hall from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. during the academic year. RSA's monitor and control access into residence halls by checking the identification of all persons entering the facility and signing in visitors and guests.
- Safety Patrol - The Safety Patrol is a partnership with several landlords who own property east of the campus. The purpose of this program is to provide an additional Syracuse Police patrol within the off-campus area where numerous students reside in an effort to deter and prevent crime.
- Students for Community Safety: Shuttle U Home - A shuttle service provides transportation from the Syracuse University campus to the University Hill homes of SU students, faculty and staff. The shuttle service operates daily from 8:15 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. The shuttle service uses a van capable of transporting up to six passengers.
- Student Advisory Council The Student Advisory Council is a monthly collaboration between DPS and a group of students to gain feedback through surveys, focus groups, and individual input for recommendations about safety initiatives.
- Silent Witness (Ethicspoint) - Anonymous and confidential information can be passed along regarding crime and disorder problems on campus.
- South Campus - In 2000, the Department opened a station in the Goldstein Student Center on the South Campus. It is common for officers assigned to patrol the South Campus to use this station to complete their reports and conduct follow-up investigations. In 2002, the South Campus Welcome Center was added on Skytop Road to limit vehicle access to South Campus to students, faculty and staff.
- Special Event Security - The Department of Public Safety provides security services to the Syracuse University community for special events. These services are charged to the requesting department. Types of events include concerts, graduations, holiday celebrations, student and department social events, protection for dignitaries, and sporting events.

A number of staff members have developed special expertise in this area and are available to evaluate the precautions which are available and/or necessary.
