Karpinko Promoted to First Sergeant

Stephen Karpinko was promoted to First Sergeant on Tuesday, July 6th by Public Safety Chief Anthony Callisto, Jr. First Sergeant Karpinko, who will celebrate 30 years with the Department of Public Safety in December, will maintain his duties as quartermaster, a position he assumed in 2005.

First Sergeant Karpinko first came to DPS after hearing about the job posting from his father Michael, who at the time was working for the Public Safety Department of the College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Karpinko interviewed for the position and was hired – but only after assuring his new boss that he would cut his long hair and shave his beard.

In November 2005, after 25 years on patrol, Sergeant Karpinko accepted the position of quartermaster, ready for the change in duties and responsibilities. He says his favorite part of this job is carrying out his duties as quartermaster, “Knowing that it is my responsibility to see that the department’s equipment, however little it may be, is cared for and working properly.”

Karpinko is pictured with DPS Chief Anthony Callisto, who administered his oath and presented Karpinko with his new stripes.
