DPS Releases New South Campus Safety Video
Aug 27,2010 at 11:17:AM

The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety has released its second student safety video, titled “South Campus Pads,” loosely based on the popular MTV series “Cribs.” The new video is aimed at the nearly 2500 students who live on South Campus, and is full of personal safety tips, as well as guidelines to keep your property and apartment safe at all times.  The new video can be seen here, or on the DPS YouTube page.

After the success of its first safety video, “Oh No, Otto!,” which featured Otto the Orange finding his way into and out of trouble in a series of vignettes designed to teach students how to stay safe on campus, the Department of Public Safety continued to explore the idea of using videos to reach students and pass along vital safety information.

The new video is aimed at the nearly 2500 students who live on South Campus, and is full of personal safety tips, as well as guidelines to keep your property and apartment safe at all times.

DPS and the Office of Residence Life will show the video to returning students, and will reach out to the student population through hall meetings, safety programs, and DPS tables and booths.

With many of the crimes committed on campus simple crimes of opportunity (i.e. leaving a laptop unattended or leaving your apartment door unlocked), Department of Public Safety Chief Anthony Callisto hopes that the video sheds light on just a few simple steps that south campus students can take to reduce their victim profile.

“The most important thing is that the students take something away from the video,” said Callisto.  “We want them to actually utilize the safety tips we present in the video, which I am confident they will.”
